Health Triangle

One of the first lessons all of my students are taught (6th, 7th, 8th grade) is about the health triangle and of the importance of practicing good habits if you want to be healthy.  I refer back to this as we transition through the health curriculum.  I teach my students that Internet safety can affect all aspects of your health.  For example, I may show clips from you tube that illustrate the dangers associated with things you post. One of the clips I really like is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w4_Hrwh2XI.  After students watch this I have them talk about how each side of Sarah's triangle is being impacted.

Through the years, I have found several websites to be useful tools in my classroom.  The first site that I refer kids to if they have more questions and want to do individual research is www.teenshealth.org.  This site can give the student insight on topics like emotions, peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, puberty, fitness and stress and information is broken up into teens, kids and parents (great since I teach grades 6-8 and the needs are very diverse within this age range).  And I have had parents say that it is a great resource for those "touchy"topics.

And probably the most used website in my curriculum is www.mypyramid.gov.  This site is used in all of my classes as a tool for assessment or review or for teaching key concepts.

If you want to know more about the content that I teach, please feel free to visit http://www.rhnet.org/webpages/rpfluke/ to see what I am doing in the classroom.  Thanks.
